CAJAMARCA, DIOCESE of. – In the Republic of Peru, department of C., suffragan of Trujillo.
Established on 5 April 1908, it comprises the department of C., with a territorial area of 25,000 sq. km and 587,644 inhabitants (1948), almost all Catholics. The diocese comprises 183 churches and 34 parishes, with 30 secular priests and 15 regular priests (1948). The episcopal city has a seminary, 6 churches—including the cathedral dedicated to s. Caterina, and the church of Belén—the convent of s. Francesco di Assisi, in whose church (Capilla de los Dolores) there are excellent bas-reliefs, the work of the local artist Sebastiano Tejada, and the convent of Belén.
