CAJAZEIRAS, Diocese of. - Republic of Brazil, State of Parahyba do Norte. Erected by Pius X on 6 February 1914 with the bull Maius Catholicae Religionis incrementum, which detached its territory from the diocese of Parahyba, of which it is a suffragan.

It comprises the western part of the State of Parahyba, at about 7° south latitude, with an area of 22,602 sq km and a population of about 300,000 souls (1948). The diocese is divided into 17 parishes. The diocesan clergy is composed of 26 diocesan priests and 7 regulars (Carmelites and Salesians, who direct the P. Rolim gymnasium in C.). The titular of the cathedral and of the diocese is Our Lady of Piety.

The Dorothean Sisters direct a college in the residential city, the Franciscan Sisters a normal school at Catolé do Rocha; the Daughters of the Divine Love the Cristo Rei boarding school at Patos.
