Chachapoyas, Diocese of

CHACHAPOYAS, DIOCESE OF. – In the Republic of Peru, department of Amazonas, suffragan of Trujillo. Erected by Pius VII on 28 May 1805 under the name of Mynas, it received its present designation from Gregory XVI on 4 July 1843.

It comprises the department of Amazonas, the province of Pataz, and part of the department of Loreto, with an area of 120,000 sq. km and a population of approximately 157,000, with 155 churches, in 30 parishes, 20 diocesan priests, and 6 religious priests (1948).
