CHABOT, JEAN-BAPTISTE. - French priest, celebrated orientalist, b. at Vouvray (Indre-et-Loire) on 16 Feb. 1865, d. at Paris on 7 Jan. 1948. He completed his studies at the seminary of Tours, at the Ecole des hautes études and at the University of Louvain. He was a member of the Institute from 1917.
His writings concern especially authors in the Syriac language. C. published, among other things, the chronicle of Dionysius of Tell-Mahré, the history of Mār Jāhbalāhā, the celebrated Synodicon Orientale, the Chronicle of Michael the Syrian and a selection of inscriptions from Palmyra. In 1903, having become, together with others, a founder of the Corpus Scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium, he took charge of the Scriptores Syri section, in which he published many valuable ancient documents, such as the Cronache minori and Theodore of Mopsuestia's commentary on the Gospel of St. John.
