**CHABOT, Jean-Baptiste.** – French priest, renowned Orientalist, b. at Vouvray (Indre-et-Loire) on 16 Feb. 1865, d. in Paris on 7 Jan. 1948. He completed his studies at the seminary of Tours, at the École des Hautes Études, and at the University of Louvain. He was a member of the Institute from 1917.
His writings pertain especially to authors of the Syriac language. Among other works, C. published the chronicle of Dionysius of Tell-Mahré, the history of Mär Jaballāhā, the celebrated Synodicon Orientale, the Chronicle of Michael the Syrian, and a selection of Palmyrene inscriptions. In 1903, having become, together with others, a founder of the Corpus Scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium, he took charge of the Syriac section, in which he published many valuable ancient documents, such as the Minor Chronicles and the commentary on the Gospel of St. John by Theodore of Mopsuestia.
