CALLINICUS I, patriarch of Constantinople. He held this office from 693 to 705. His severe admonitions against the emperor Justinian II ultimately led to his complete disfavor. Fearing imperial wrath, C. took part in the conspiracy that succeeded in mutilating and exiling Justinian, who, upon regaining power, had C. blinded and exiled to Rome. There, according to the Easterners, he was buried alive in a cell. The Greeks celebrate C. as a saint on August 23.
