CALLINTERIE (Καλλυντήρια). – Ancient Athenian festivals in honor of Athena, Plinterie (v.). Nothing has been handed down to us concerning the rites celebrated, but the name and the connection with the Plinterie show that these were rites of purification, during which the oil of Athena Polias’s lamp was perhaps renewed. It is uncertain when they were celebrated: according to some, on 19 Targelion (May); according to others, after the 20th of that month.
