MYSTIC CHEST. - A container of woven wicker in the shape of a cylindrical box, with a lid.

Originally it was not a cult object; only in Demosthenes and Theocritus is the word found used in relation to worship.Essential element of the ancient Greek mysteries, it was intended to hide from the eyes of the profane the sacred and mysterious objects that were revealed to the initiates in the initiation. It is often depicted on monuments and coins; sometimes a serpent comes out of it.
