DALLAS, DIOCESE of - Diocese and city in the State of Texas, United States of America, suffragan of San Antonio, comprising a territory of approximately 81,800 sq km. It is a suffragan of the metropolitan diocese of San Antonio.
In 1946, out of over 2,290,000 inhabitants it counted more than 70,000 Catholics under the direction of 87 diocesan priests and 79 religious, with 91 parishes, 43 missions, 15 stations and 45 chapels, 1 higher college, 23 High schools, 42 parochial schools. In 1946 there were 547 conversions. Nine male religious institutes and 13 female ones reside in the diocese.
The territory of the Diocese was colonized by families who immigrated especially from Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana and by a large number of Negroes. Its erection as a diocese with residence at D. took place on 15 July 1890, by dismemberment from the diocese of Galveston. It was at first a suffragan of New Orleans, then it formed the dioceses of El Paso (1914) and Amarillo (1925), to pass on 3 Aug. 1926 to the new province of San Antonio.
