DALLAS, Diocese of. — Diocese and city in the State of Texas, United States of America, suffragan of San Antonio, comprising a territory of approx. 81,800 sq. km. It is suffragan to the metropolitan see of San Antonio.
In 1946, out of more than 2,290,000 inhabitants, it counted more than 70,000 Catholics under the care of 87 diocesan priests and 79 religious, with 91 parishes, 43 missions, 15 stations and 45 chapels, 1 college, 23 high schools, 42 parochial schools. In 1946 there were 547 conversions. In the diocese there are 9 male religious institutes and 13 female.
The territory of the diocese was settled by immigrant families, especially from Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana, and by a large number of Negroes. Its erection as a diocese with residence in Dallas took place on 15 July 1890, by separation from the diocese of Galveston. It was first suffragan to New Orleans, then formed the dioceses of El Paso (1914) and Amarillo (1925), before passing on 3 August 1926 to the new province of San Antonio.
