EL PASO, DIOCESI di. - Diocese = city in the state of Texas, United States of America, suffragan of Santa Fé.
It comprises the counties of El P., Brewster, Culberson, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Loving, Pecos, Presidio, Reeves, Terrell, Ward, Winkler, in western Texas, and Doña Anna, Eddy, Grant, Hidalgo, Lea, Luna, Otero, and all that part of the Serra south of the 33rd degree of north latitude in New Mexico, that is, a territory of approximately 167,620 sq. km. In 1948, out of a population of approximately 315,479 inhabitants, it had 135,277 Catholics, served by 47 diocesan priests and 69 religious, with 50 parishes, 60 missions, 8 chapels, and 41 stations, 6 academies and High Schools, and 17 parish schools. In the year 1946 there were 147 conversions.
The diocese was erected on 3 March 1914, through the dismemberment of the dioceses of Tucson, Dallas, and S. Antonio, and on the same day became a suffragan of Santa Fé. The cathedral is dedicated to S. Patrizio.
