It comprises the counties of El P., Brewster, Culberson, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Loving, Pecos, Presidio, Reeves, Terrell, Ward, Winkler, in western Texas, and of Doña Anna, Eddy, Grant, Hidalgo, Lea, Luna, Otero and all that part of the Sierra south of the 33rd degree of north latitude in New Mexico, that is, a territory of about 167,620 sq km. In 1948, out of a population of about 315,479 inhabitants, it counted 135,277 Catholics, directed by 47 diocesan priests and 69 religious, with 50 parishes, 60 missions, 8 chapels and 41 stations, 6 academies and High Schools and 17 parochial schools. In the year 1946 there were 147 conversions.
The diocese was erected on 3 March 1914, by dismemberment of the dioceses of Tucson, Dallas and San Antonio, and on the same day it became a suffragan of Santa Fe. The cathedral is dedicated to St. Patrick.
