Diocese of El Paso
El Paso is a city in the state of Texas, United States of America, on the Santa Fe agency.
It comprises the counties of El Paso, Brewster, Culberson, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Loving, Pecos, Presidio, Reeves, Terrell, Ward, Winkler, in west Texas, and Doña Ana, Eddy, Grant, Hidalgo, Lea, Luna, Otero and all that part of the Sierra south of the 33rd degree of north latitude in New Mexico, i.e., a territory of about 167,620 sq. km. In 1948, out of a population of about 347,900 inhabitants, it counted 135,277 Catholics, served by 47 diocesan and 69 religious priests, with 50 parishes, 60 missions, 8 chapels and 41 stations, 6 academies and high schools, and 17 parochial schools. In the year 1946 there were 147 conversions.
The diocese was erected on March 3, 1914, by separation from the dioceses of Tucson, Dallas, and San Antonio, and on the same day it was established at the Santa Fe agency. The cathedral is dedicated to St. Patrick.
