FALL RIVER, DIOCESE of. - A city in the State of Massachusetts in the United States of America and the seat of a suffragan diocese of Boston, comprising a territory of approximately 3,120 sq. km. in the south of that State.

In 1948, out of a population of 432,000 inhabitants, there were 215,023 Catholics, many of them French-Canadians, Italians, Poles, and Portuguese, divided among 96 parishes, 37 chapels, and 20 missions, under the direction of 211 priests and 101 religious, with 10 High Schools and 46 elementary schools. In 1946 there were 280 conversions.

Established on 12 March 1904 by the dismemberment of the diocese of Providence, the origins of this diocese are closely connected with the history of the dioceses of Boston, Hartford, and Providence, to which the territory of F. R. successively belonged.
