FALOCI PULIGNANI, MICHELE. - Prelate and historian, born at Foligno on 9 July 1856; ordained priest on 12 Apr. 1879, professor at the local Seminary and at the regional one in Assisi, librarian of the Iacobilli and municipal Library, vicar general of the diocese of Foligno and of the archdiocese of Spoleto. He died on 1 Oct. 1940.
He worked for the restoration of city monuments (the Cathedral, Palazzo Trinci, etc.); he assembled a rich library of local history (8,000 volumes and 300 manuscripts), which he bequeathed to his city. In addition to pursuing activity as a journalist
and polemicist in the political and social field, P., whose works, both manuscript and printed, number 523, devoted himself to Foligno hagiography (La « Passio Sancti Feliciani » e il suo valore storico, 1917), ecclesiastical history (I priori della cattedrale di Foligno, 1914), figures, historical episodes, local diaries and chronicles (Fragmenta Fulginalis historiae : RIS, XVI, 1933), the lordship of the Trinci (Le arti e le lettere alla corte dei Trinci, 1888), etc.
Noteworthy are his writings on Le origini del cristianesimo nell'Umbria (in Archivio storico per le Marche e per l'Umbria, 1913 and following years, of which he was co-founder, and in Archivio per la storia ecclesiastica dell'Umbria, of which he was founder), as well as those on Franciscan subjects, largely published in Miscellanea Franciscana, of which he was founder and director from 1886 to 1931.
