It comprises a territory of about 32,260 sq. km. in the south-western part of the same State. In 1949 it had 111 secular clergy and 22 regular clergy, in 66 parishes, 8 chapels, 31 missions; 14 high schools, 26 parochial schools; in the diocese are the Benedictines, the Passionists and 8 female religious communities. The cathedral is dedicated to St. Ambrose. The diocese was erected by separation from that of Davenport on 12 Aug. 1911 and united as a suffragan to the archdiocese of Dubuque.
