ANARGYRI. - This is what the Greek Church calls the saints who, according to hagiographic writings, practiced medicine without payment (hence "anargiri," without money). In the Byzantine rite for the preparation of the oblations, commemoration is made of the "holy and wonder-working a. Cosmas and Damian, Cyrus and John, Panteleimon and Hermolaus and of all the holy a."; but in practice the title is reserved for Sts. Cosmas and Damian, who are the a. par excellence (v. COSMA e DAMIANO).
