ANÀRGIRI

ANÀRGIRI. — The Greek Church applies this name to the saints who, according to hagiographical writings, practiced medicine without remuneration (hence *anargyroi*, without silver). In the Byzantine rite of the preparation of the prosphora, mention is made of “the holy and wonderworking *anargyroi* Cosmas and Damian, Cyrus and John, Panteleemon and Hermolaus and all the holy *anargyroi*.” In practice, however, the title is reserved to SS. Cosmas and Damian, who are the *anargyroi* par excellence (see COSMAS AND DAMIAN).
