ANDRY, NICOLAS. - French theologian and physician, brother of CLAUDE, b. at Lyon in 1658, d. at Paris on 13 May 1742. At the age of 32 he abandoned the ecclesiastical state to devote himself, under the pseudonym of Boisregard, to the study of medicine. In 1724 he was appointed dean of the faculty of medicine in Paris.
Among his works are *Le régime de carême considéré par rapport à la nature du corps et des aliments* (Paris 1710) and *Traité des aliments de carême* (2 vols., Paris 1713): in these he elucidates, from both a scientific and a moral standpoint, numerous questions concerning abstinence and fasting.
