ARIZZARA, GIACINTO

ARIZZARA, GIACINTO. - A Dominican of the 18th century, professor of Sacred Scripture and Oriental languages at the University of Modena. Not unworthy, as a Hebraist, of his contemporary G. Bern. De Rossi, he published *De hebraicorum characterum in s. biblis origine et antiquitate*, Modena 1782. Notable is his introduction to biblical study: *Elementa sacrae hermeneuticae*, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana 1790, in which he treats with rigor, referring to the soundest criticism of his time, the questions relating to inspiration, to the canon, and to the authority of the versions. He demands of the interpreter of Sacred Scripture philological (Hebrew and Greek language) and historical science, and rejects subjective exegesis. Unfortunately, this work, which appeared at a troubled time, remained without echo among Catholics.
