Armendáriz, Julián

ARMENDÁRIZ, JULIÁN. - Spanish poet and playwright, b. perhaps in 1585 in Salamanca, where he studied arts, and d. in 1614. In honor of the patron saint of his native city, Juan de Sahagún, he wrote a poem of ten cantos in quatrains; as a playwright one comedy by him survives, Las burlas veras, whose subject, widely circulated in the theater and in narrative literature (the woman who disguises herself as a man to enter the house of the man she loves and marry him), he drew from a novella by Bandello (Gl'ingannati); the same theme was later taken up in other ways by Lope and by Calderón.
