ARMENDÁRIZ, Julián. — Spanish poet and playwright, born perhaps in 1585 in Salamanca, where he studied the arts, and died in 1614. In honour of the patron saint of his native city, Juan de Sahagún, he wrote a ten-canto poem in quatrains; as a playwright, one of his comedies survives, *Las burlas veras*, whose subject—widely used in theatre and narrative literature (a woman disguises herself as a man to enter the house of the man she loves and marry him)—he drew from a novella by Bandello (*Gl'ingannati*); the same theme was later taken up in different ways by Lope and Calderón.
