ARMENDÁRIZ, JULIÁN. – Spanish poet and dramatist, b. perhaps in 1585 in Salamanca, where he studied the arts, and d. in 1614. In honour of the patron saint of his native city, Juan de Sahagún, he wrote a poem of ten cantos in quatrains; as a dramatist, one comedy by him has survived, Las burlas veras, whose plot, widely disseminated in the theatre and narrative literature (the woman who disguises herself as a man in order to enter the house of the man she loves and marry him) he took from a novella by Bandello (Gl'ingannati); the same theme was later taken up in a different form by Lope and Calderón.
