JOHN OF SAN FACONDO OR OF SAHAGÚN, Saint. - Born at Sahagún in the region of León in Spain in 1429, died at Salamanca on 11 June 1479. In his adolescence he was entrusted to the Benedictines. He was ordained a priest by the bishop of Burgos, who enrolled him among the canons of the Cathedral.
Ardent with love for souls, he renounced his canonry and undertook to officiate at a chapel, where he preached, heard confessions, and directed in the spiritual life all those who, in great numbers, turned to him. When bloody discord arose among the nobles of Salamanca, he betook himself to that city and labored effectively to extinguish their hatreds. Stricken by a very grave illness, he promised to become a religious if he recovered. On 18 June 1463 he took the Augustinian habit. He was an exemplary subject and superior. Inflamed with zeal for the spiritual and temporal welfare of his neighbor, he reproached bitterly and openly the masters who oppressed their servants: for this reason he was more than once sought out to be killed by the duke of Alba and by others. Clement VIII in 1601 granted his Office and Mass; Alexander VIII in 1690 enrolled him in the roll of the saints. The bull of canonization was promulgated in 1691 by Innocent XII. Feast on 12 June.
