GHETTI, ANDREA da VOLTERRA. - Augustinian theologian, preacher, and educator, b. at Montecatini Val di Cecina, near Volterra, at the beginning of the 16th century, d. 12 June 1593. He preached in the principal cities of Italy. Reformist or wholly heretical ideas were thought to be discernible in his sermons; but he always defended himself against the accusation, although it was repeated throughout his life. He was several times forbidden to preach, teach, or hear confessions, and was even imprisoned and deprived of every office in his Order. Protected by Cardinal Seripando, in 1563 he took part in the Council of Trent, where, in the session of 19 Aug., he delivered an address of unexpected orthodoxy.
There remain of him: Della Grazia e delle opere (Florence 1544); Sopra la cura e diligenza che debbono avere i padri e le madri verso i loro figliuoli (Bologna 1572), orthodox works republished by Battistini as an appendix to his monograph, and separately in 1928.
