ANDREA GHETTI da VOLTERRA. — Augustinian theologian, preacher, and pedagogist, born in Montecatini Val di Cecina, near Volterra, at the beginning of the 16th century, died 12 June 1593. He preached in the principal cities of Italy. Some wished to detect in his discourses reformist or outright heretical ideas; but he always defended himself against the accusation, even though it was repeated throughout his life. On several occasions he was forbidden to preach, to teach, to hear confessions, and was even imprisoned and deprived of any office in his Order. Protected by Cardinal Seripando, in 1563 he took part in the Council of Trent, where in the session of 19 August he delivered an oration of unexpectedly orthodox character.
Of his works there remain: *Della Grazia e delle opere* (Florence 1544); *Sopra la cura e diligenza che debbono avere i padri e le madri verso i loro figliuoli* (Bologna 1572), orthodox little works republished by Battistini as an appendix to his monograph and separately in 1928.
