GIROLAMO da SIENA. - Augustinian ascetic and mystic of the 14th century, born in Siena c. 1330, died in Arezzo c. 1420. From the earliest years of his priesthood he devoted himself with zeal and fruitfulness to preaching and the spiritual direction of both laypeople and religious. He was esteemed by St. Catherine of Siena and the Bl. John Colombini, who often sought his counsel and commended themselves to his prayers. His writings are cited by the Crusca as texts of the Italian language.
