Jerome of Treviso, the Younger

GIROLAMO da TREVISO, il GIOVANE. – Painter, sculptor, and architect, b. in Treviso in 1497 (?) and d. in 1544 during the siege of Boulogne in France. Bolognese documents have shown him to have been the son of a Tomaso, and the hypothesis that he belonged to the family of Pier Maria Pennacchi therefore falls.

In 1525 he was in Bologna and received the commission for a relief for the Porta di S. Petronio, and the following year for the Stories of s. Antonio in the Guidotti Chapel in the same church. In 1527–28 he is said, according to Vasari, to have been in Genoa to paint the façade of the Doria residence, from which he is said to have departed because of disagreements with Perin del Vaga, returning to Bologna. In 1530 he was again in Venice, where in 1531 he is said to have painted an altarpiece for S. Salvatore, while the lost mythological frescoes of the Odoni residence date from 1532. In 1533 he frescoed the apse of the Comenda in Faenza; then he was again in Bologna in 1537 and finally, because of friction with other artists, left Italy for England, going to the court of Giorgio VIII as a military engineer. Among his youthful works, after Longhi attributed to Palma the painting of S. Alesca between s. Girolamo and s. Sebastiano in the sacristy of S. Maria della Salute in Venice, the Noli me tangere in S. Giovanni in Monte in Bologna should be mentioned, in addition to the aforementioned frescoes with Miracles of s. Antonio in S. Petronio; subsequently his art reflects the influence of Dosso and Pordenone, as well as that of Raffaello and Parmigianino, especially visible in the Faentine frescoes of 1533. These nevertheless represent a clear point of arrival, following the uncertainties of his early works.
