AMARAL, ANTONIO CAETANO do. - Portuguese historian and scholar, b. in Lisbon in 1747, and d. there in 1819. He was canon of the see of Evora, which he renounced in 1766, and deputy of the Holy Office. He had taken his doctorate in canon law at Coimbra, and from 1780 the Academia Real das Sciencias of Lisbon counted him in its first group of members. Although interrupted by death, his work has quite vast proportions and concerns above all the civil and religious history of Portugal: especially notable are five memoirs, which trace the national history of the times before the Roman conquest and of those of the first Portuguese monarchy. The Church owes to him two volumes of Memorie sulla vita dell'arcivescovo di Braga don Fr. Caetano Brandão, a Vita di s. Martino Bracarense and one of s. Fruttuoso. The latter is of special interest for its introduction, which deals with the state of Spanish ecclesiastical discipline, and particularly of the province of Braga, in the 7th century. To all these works are added translations of French and Spanish writings of a historical or religious character.
