AMARAL, GASPARE. — Jesuit missionary, born at Corvaceira in Portugal in 1592. He worked in Goa, Macao, Cocincina, and then for seven years in Tondino. Rector at Macao (1633), vice-provincial (1641–45) of the Japanese province, then expelled from Japan, he died in a shipwreck in 1669 while returning to Tonkino. He left in manuscript an Annamite dictionary, later used by Fr. Alessandro de Rhodes in the compilation of his well-known work.
