ALTOGRADI, NICOLA

ALTOGRADI, NICOLA. - Jesuit missionary in America, b. in Lucca on 1 Sept. 1689, d. 11 Feb. 1759. He entered the novitiate in 1706 and in 1723 transferred to the province of Peru, where for fifteen years he was superior of the mission to the Moxos. Various manuscripts by him are preserved (National Library of Lima, etc.), composed mainly to defend the missions of Spanish religious against incursions by Portuguese colonists.
