Altomonte (Hohenberg), Martino

ALTOMONTE (HOHENBERG), MARTINO. - Painter, b. in Naples on 8 May 1657 (?), d. in Vienna on 14 Sept. 1745. He was in Rome a pupil of Gaulli, of Giacinto Brandi and of Maratti. Summoned in 1684 to Warsaw by King Sobieski, he changed his German name to its corresponding Italian one. He was active mainly in Austria, where he executed several ceiling decorations in the Italian manner and altarpieces.

BARTOLOMEO, his son, b. in Warsaw in 1693, d. at St. Florian in 1783, was a pupil of his father and studied with B. Luti and with Solimena. He executed altarpieces and frescoes, among which we recall the decorations of the house of the canons regular of St. Florian (Austria).
