ALLORI, ALESSANDRO. - Painter, b. in Florence on May 3, 1535, d. Sept. 22, 1607. Left an orphan by his father, he was taken in by Agnolo Bronzino (v. BRONZINO), whose name he adopted. Initiated by him into art, he soon became his assistant and remained faithful to his example, making an exception only for Michelangelo. He was very active, decorating numerous churches in Florence and palaces and villas in the surrounding area. We may recall: the decoration of the Gaddi chapel in S. Maria Novella; the Miracle of the Manna in the refectory of S. Maria Novella; the paintings in the Salviati chapel in S. Marco; Christ and the Adulteress in S. Spirito; the Resurrection in the Carmine of Pisa; the St. Fiacre in the sacristy of S. Spirito; the frescoes with stories of the house of Medici in the villa of Poggio a Caiano.
