ALBERTI

ALBERTI. - A family of painters originating from Borgo S. Sepolcro, whose activity was carried on chiefly in Roma.

CHERUBINO, born at Borgo S. Sepolcro on 24 Feb. 1553, died at Roma on 18 Oct. 1615, was a painter and engraver; he received his first instruction perhaps from his father ALBERTO, an architect, but subsequently absorbed diverse influences, while remaining on the margins of the conventionalism of the period. In Roma he decorated the Sala Clementina in the Vaticano, the Aldobrandini chapel at the Minerva, the choir of S. Silvestro al Quirinale, and the sacristy of S. Giovanni in Laterano. Noteworthy are his foreshortening effects and

his perspectives. His brothers were ALESSANDRO, born at Borgo S. Sepolcro on 9 March 1551, died at Roma on 10 July 1596, and GIOVANNI, born at Borgo S. Sepolcro on 19 Oct. 1558, died at Roma on 10 Aug. 1601; together they worked in the sacristy of S. Giovanni in Laterano and, with Cherubino, in the Sala Clementina in Vaticano.

DURANTE, their cousin (1538-1613), worked in S. Maria in Vallicella (Nativity), in S. Girolamo della Carità, at the Gesù (Transfiguration), at SS. Apostoli (Annunciation), at the Palazzo del Quirinale, and at the Madonna dei Monti (Annunciation). He was also an engraver.
