ALFIERI, BENEDETTO INNOCENTE. — Architect, of a noble Asti family, born in Rome in 1700, where he had Pope Innocent XII as his godfather, died in Turin on 9 Dec. 1767. He trained in Rome, where he studied antiquity and the Renaissance.
He designed the façade of Vercelli Cathedral, inspired by that of St John Lateran (v. GALLIA); in Novara he erected the bell tower of St Gaudenzio; in Carignano he built the church of SS John the Baptist and Remigius, notable for its semi-elliptical plan. He also constructed civil buildings in Turin and other cities of Piedmont.
