ALBERTAZZI, ADOLFO. - Novelist and critic, born in Bologna (1865-1924). He contributed to the most important reviews and newspapers in Italy. A pupil of Carducci, he later became a secondary-school and university teacher. More than in scholarly works, he succeeded best in works of creation. His most extensive novel, L'Ave, seemed a revelation. Of his short stories, the best collections are: Novelle umoristiche, Facce allegre, A stare al mondo, Sotto il sole, Top. To children's literature he gave, among other things: Asini e compagni, Ora e sempre.
A.'s prose has the merit of precision, of a rigorous sense of limit and of the necessary, of a terse and straightforward language. The simplicity of his characters - almost all chosen from the common people - is only external, because almost all are without simplism; indeed they are grasped as exponents of all the difficulties of the human soul.
