AMERICA. - Weekly periodical, published in New York by Jesuits chosen from the American provinces of the Order. Founded in 1909 to replace the monthly Messenger, it always retained the character of a "review of the week" from the Catholic standpoint. To complement the work of A., which was more journalistic in character, the editors began in 1925 the publication of a quarterly review of high popularization, Thought (later passed to Fordham University), and the America Press became the publisher of a certain number of books of piety, religious formation and American ecclesiastical history. A. has shown itself to be one of the most influential organs on Catholic opinion in the United States.
