Arnaldo of Tongern

ARNALDO DI TONGERN

ARNALDO OF TONGERN. - Augustinian canon regular, b. at Tongern no one knows when, d. at Leiden in 1540. Dean of the faculty of arts of Cologne and professor of theology and canon law, he took part in the Reuchlin controversy, and wrote at that time the Articoli de indico favore. As is known, Reuchlin pronounced in favor of the preservation of the Hebrew books, which, with the permission of the emperor Maximilian, an attempt was being made to destroy if they were contrary to the teaching of Christian doctrine.
