AQUINO, LADISLAO d'. - Cardinal, b. in Naples around 1546, from the family of St. Thomas, d. in Rome in 1621. Pius V opened the path of a prelate's career to him, calling him to Rome; Gregory XIII elected him bishop of Venafro (1588); Paul V appointed him nuncio, first attempting to send him to Turin, where Charles Emmanuel I, at that moment of anti-Spanish reaction, did not want him, because he knew him, not without reason, to be loyal to Spain, and then sending him to Switzerland, where he had to acknowledge that what the Protestants had removed from obedience to the Catholic Church was to be considered irretrievably lost. He became a cardinal in 1616, and when the conclave of Gregory XV began he entered it, according to popular report, with the best of auspices. Death overtook him in that same conclave. The information and the report that he left concerning the nunciature of Lucerne demonstrate in him neither excessive perspicacity nor awareness of the missionary nature of that most delicate office.
