Aquino, Filippo D' (Giuda Mordechai)

AQUINO, FILIPPO d' (GIUDA MORDECHAI). - Hebraist, b. at Avignon or Carpentras (2nd half of the 16th century), d. at Paris in 1650. He converted from Judaism and was baptized at Aquino, whence he took his new name, leaving that of Jehudà Mordechai.

Having gone to Paris in 1610, he was professor of Hebrew language and literature at the Collège de France until almost his death. He supported and assisted Michele Le Jay (Jajus) in the printing and correction of the Hebrew and Aramaic text of the Paris Polyglot. Among other things he published (1629) a great Hebrew, Aramaic and Talmudic-rabbinic dictionary, and wrote on the rabbinic interpretations of the Pentateuch (1620) and on the Tabernacle (1623, enlarged ed. 1624). He composed a Hebrew version of the New Testament and an Italian translation of the Mishnaic tractate Abot.
