BAR QAPPARA. – Palestinian rabbi (early 3rd century A.D.), one of the earliest disciples of R. JEHÚDHAH han-NÁSÍ, whom he assisted in the compilation of the Mishnah. He belonged to the 5th generation of the Tannaim.
He also composed his own Mishnah, of which notable traces remain. He exercised great influence, and many of his sayings are recorded. He was also a poet, with a tendency toward satire. He was head of the academy at Caesarea, and it appears that R. JEHÚDHAH ben LÊWÎ was one of his pupils.
