BAR QAPPARA. - Palestinian rabbi (early 3rd century AD), one of the oldest disciples of R. Jehudhah han-Nasi, whom he assisted in the redaction of the Mishnah. He belonged to the 5th generation of the Tannaim.
He also composed a Mishnah of his own, of which notable traces remain. He exercised great influence, and many of his aphorisms are remembered. He was also a poet, with a tendency to satire. He was head of the academy of Caesarea, and it seems that R. Jehoshua' ben Levi was his pupil.
