BAROZZI, PIETRO

BAROZZI, PIETRO. — Humanist bishop, born in Venice in 1441, died in Padua on 10 January 1507. Shortly before turning thirty, he was appointed bishop of Belluno (1470); he was subsequently transferred to Padua (1487), the see in which he remained until his death. An exemplary pastor of deep spirituality, he was also a renowned man of letters and a refined Latin poet, as demonstrated by the hexameters of the Vita Christi, still unpublished. Several of his posthumous pamphlets display profound ascetical learning: De modo bene moriendi, published in Italian at Portogruaro (1858), Consolatorii libri tres, Officium ad deprecandam pestilentiam, ad impetrandam pluviam, ad aëri serenitatem posendam.
