BARONE, VERONICA

BARONE, Veronica. – Mystic, born at Vizzini (Catania) on 16 Dec. 1856, died there in a reputation for holiness on 4 Jan. 1878.

At baptism she was given the name Febronia. In childhood she was miraculously cured of a malignant fever after an apparition of St Veronica Giuliani.

Her brief life was marked by many ecstasies and charisms. On 9 July 1871 she enrolled in the Third Order of St Francis, taking the name Veronica and thereafter living as a religious in her own home according to Sicilian custom. Most painful temptations, illnesses and sufferings matched the thirst for affliction that drove her to impose harsh penances upon herself.
