Arndt, Ernst Moritz

ARNDT, ERNST MORITZ. - German writer, b. on the island of Rügen in 1769, d. in 1860. A fanatical love for the fatherland and for freedom, both threatened by Napoleon, and a firm faith in the God "who does not want slaves" and whom he does not hesitate to call "German," are at the basis of all his works. Among them we recall: Geist der Zeit (part 1, Altona 1806; 2nd, London 1807; 3rd, Berlin 1813; 4th, ibid. 1818); Kurzer Kathechismus für deutsche Soldaten (Leipzig 1814); and the famous libel, Der Rhein Deutschlands Strom, nicht Deutschlands Grenze (Leipzig 1813). His war songs, which earned him the title of German Tyrtaeus, were extremely widespread. His numerous spiritual songs in the style of Fleming are noteworthy.
