Albertinus, Aegidius

ALBERTINUS, AEGIDIUS. - German satirical poet, b. at Deventer in Holland in 1560 and d. at Munich in 1620. He was secretary to the Elector of Bavaria Maximilian. An admirer and translator of Spanish picaresque novels, he imitated their lively and drastic style in order to offer contemporary Catholic readers all the knowledge of the age in a popular and humorous form. The moralizing tendency is especially felt in his work "The Kingdom of Lucifer and of Christ" (Luzifers und Christi Königreich, 1618).
