AEGIDIUS ALBERTINUS. — German satirical poet, b. at Deventer in Holland in 1560, d. at Munich in 1620. He was secretary to Maximilian, Elector of Bavaria. An admirer and translator of Spanish picaresque novels, he imitated their lively and drastic style to offer contemporary Catholic readers all the knowledge of the time in a popular and humorous form. The moralizing tendency is especially evident in his work *The Kingdom of Lucifer and of Christ* (*Lucifers und Christi Königreich*, 1618).
