ALBERTO, ANTIPAPA

ALBERT, Antipope. - He was bishop of Sabina and was elected in February or March 1102 in St. Peter's by the supporters of Emperor Henry IV, in opposition to the legitimate pontiff Paschal II; the violence of the investiture struggle explains this schism and the disgusting scenes that followed. In fact A. was carried to the church of S. Marcello under the protection of a certain John, son of Odolindo, but the latter allowed himself to be corrupted by the money of Paschal's partisans and handed the antipope over into the hands of his enemies. Riots broke out, A. was driven out, the pallium was torn from him, he was insulted and finally loaded onto a horse and taken to the Lateran, where he was shut up in prison. Later A. was transferred to the monastery of S. Lorenzo and ended his life there as a monk.
