AUGURIUM CANARIUM. — One of the movable conception festivals (fetes mobiles) of Roman paganism. It was fixed each year by the pontiffs for a specific period during the ripening of the grain. In addition to this, the sacrifice of a dog at the Porta Catularia also attests to the agrarian character of the festival, which, according to some authors, may be connected with the damage caused by the Dog Days.
