AVEIRO, PANTALEÃO de. — In the Portuguese prose of the 16th century, rich in curious and interesting travel narratives about foreign lands, the Itinerarium Terrae Sanctae by this Franciscan friar of the Algarve province holds a special place. He lived toward the end of the 1500s; he had long wandered through the holy places, and in 1563 he arrived in Jerusalem, where he stayed for three years. His book, published in 1593 in Lisbon, is one of the first of its kind to appear in the Iberian Peninsula: it offers a vivid and sometimes moving narrative, rich in details and curiosities.
In addition to the first edition, already mentioned, the Itinerarium Terrae Sanctae and its particularities had various editions (1596, 1600, etc.) that demonstrate its success. The latest is the one printed in Lisbon in 1927.
