Aveiro, Pantaleão de

AVEIRO, PANTALEÃO de. - In sixteenth-century Portuguese prose, rich in curious and interesting accounts of travels in foreign countries, a particular place is occupied by the Itinerario della Terra Santa of this Franciscan from the province of Algarve, who lived toward the end of the sixteenth century; he had long pilgrimaged through the holy places, and in 1563 he reached Jerusalem, where he stayed for three years. His book, published in 1593 in Lisbon, is one of the first of its kind to appear in the Iberian peninsula: it offers us a colorful and at times moving narrative, rich in minutiae and curiosities.

Besides the first, already mentioned, the Itinerario da Terrasoneta e suas particularidades had various editions (1596, 1600, etc.) that demonstrate its success. The last is the one printed in Lisbon in 1927.
