AVEIRO, PANTALEÃO de. — In the Portuguese prose of the sixteenth century, rich in curious and interesting accounts of journeys to foreign lands, a particular place is occupied by the Itinerary of the Holy Land of this Franciscan from the province of Algarve, who lived toward the end of the sixteenth century; he had travelled for a long time through the holy places, and in 1563 reached Jerusalem, where he stayed for three years. His book, published in Lisbon in 1593, is one of the first of its kind to appear in the Iberian Peninsula: it offers us a vivid and at times moving narrative, rich in minutiae and curiosities.
In addition to the first edition, already mentioned, the Itinerario da Terrasoneta e suas particularidades went through various editions (1596, 1600, etc.), which demonstrate its success. The last is the one printed in Lisbon in 1927. Ruggero M. Ruggieri
