BACCELLI, LIBERATO. - Piarist physicist, b. in Lucca on 18 Nov. 1772, d. in Modena on 21 Oct. 1835. He taught physics in Correggio and at the University of Bologna, of which he was also regent during the Napoleonic period. After the Restoration of 1815, he moved again to Correggio, then to the University of Modena, as professor of experimental physics. He was one of the most illustrious physicists of his time. In 1821, a few months after Oersted's communication, he published his research on electro-magnetic phenomena, as a rival of Faraday, Ampère and Arago. His studies and discoveries in chemistry, hydraulics and optics are also noteworthy. To him must be credited the liquefaction of ammonia gas, which he obtained in 1811, twelve years before Faraday's experiments.
