Baldwin V, King of Jerusalem

BALDOVINO V, RE DI GERUSALEMME

BALDWIN V, King of Jerusalem. - Son of the sister of Baldwin IV, Sibylla, and of William of Montferrat, b. in 1177, d. in 1186. His uncle, Baldwin IV, had him crowned on 20 Nov. 1183, and B. succeeded him in March 1185. On his behalf Joscelin of Edessa and Raymond of Tripoli continued to govern the kingdom, and the latter concluded a four-year truce with Saladin. The premature death of the young king B., which occurred in 1186 at the age of 10, left the field free for the discords among the claimants to the throne of Jerusalem, which prepared its fall.
