BALDWIN V, king of JERUSALEM. — Son of Sibylla, sister of Baldwin IV, and of William of Montferrat, born in 1177, died in 1186. His uncle, Baldwin IV, had him crowned on 20 November 1183, and Baldwin V succeeded him in March 1185. The kingdom continued to be governed for him by Joscelin of Edessa and Raymond of Tripoli, who concluded a four-year truce with Saladin. The premature death of the young king Baldwin, who died in 1186 at the age of ten, left the field open to the discord among the claimants to the throne of Jerusalem, which prepared the way for its fall.
