Bartmann, Bernhard

BARTMANN, BERNHARD. - Professor of theology, b. at Madfeld, in Westphalia, on 28 June 1860, d. in 1938. Ordained a priest in 1888, he obtained a doctorate in theology at Tübingen in 1895. In 1898 he was appointed professor of dogmatics at Paderborn.

Restrained in his exposition, he excels in the positive method. His principal work is the Lehrbuch der Dogmatik (1905-07, 7th ed., 1928, translated into French). The following of his other works deserve particular mention: Christus, ein Gegener des Marienkultus? (1909); Grundriss der Dogmatik (2nd ed. 1931); Das Fegfener (2nd ed. 1931, translated into Italian).
