BARTMANN, BERNHARD. — Professor of theology, born at Madfeld, in Westphalia, on 28 June 1860, died in 1938. Ordained a priest in 1888, he obtained his doctorate in theology at Tübingen in 1895. In 1898 he was appointed professor of dogmatic theology at Paderborn.
Sober in exposition, he excels in the positive method. His principal work is the Lehrbuch der Dogmatik (1905–07, 7th ed., 1928, translated into French). The following other works of his also deserve particular mention: Christus, ein Gegener des Marienkultus? (1909); Grundriss der Dogmatik (2nd ed. 1931); Das Fegfener (2nd ed. 1931, translated into Italian).
