BARTMANN, Bernhard. - Professor of theology, born at Madfeld, in Westphalia, on 28 June 1860, died in 1938. Ordained priest in 1888, he obtained a doctorate in theology at Tübingen in 1895. In 1898 he was appointed professor of dogmatics at Paderborn.
Sober in exposition, he excelled in the positive method. His principal work is the *Lehrbuch der Dogmatik* (1905-07, 7th ed., 1928, translated into French). Worthy of special mention are the following other works: *Christus, ein Gegner des Marienkultus?* (1909); *Grundriss der Dogmatik* (2nd ed. 1931); *Das Fegefeuer* (2nd ed. 1931, translated into Italian).
