Baseggio, Maria Felicita

BASEGGIO, MARIA FELICITA. - Mystic, b. in Ferrara on 5 May 1752, to a family of artists originally from Venice, d. in Rovigo on 11 Feb. 1829. Only at the age of 32 could she be received among the Franciscan Tertiary sisters of Rovigo. From 1805 to 1810 she was in the monastery of the Augustinian nuns of the same city. When this Order too was suppressed by Napoleonic decree, she withdrew to private life. Of lively intellect, she wrote in poetry and in prose, documenting her mystical experiences. She had charisms; on her breast she bore the stigmata in the form of a cross. Her ascetical treatises, theologically sound and profound, follow in the footsteps of St. Thomas. The cause of her beatification has been introduced.
