BASIL of CORFU. - A dissident bishop of Corfu who lived between the 12th and 13th centuries, dying around 1220. Well versed in both theological and secular sciences, he is regarded by Greek dissidents as one of the most distinguished figures of that age. He wrote a letter to Pope Innocent III upholding the dissident thesis on the procession of the Holy Spirit and asserting the prerogatives of the Byzantine patriarchate. He claimed that the Fourth Lateran Council was not ecumenical. Two discourses addressed to the patriarchs, which remain unpublished, are also noteworthy.
