BATHUEL

BATHUEL (Hebrew: Bethá'el). - Son of Nahor and father of Rebekah (Gen. 22:23; 24:24). When Eliezer, Abraham's servant, asked for Rebekah as a bride for Isaac, B. appears only to give his consent (Gen. 24:50). Exegetes explain with various hypotheses the secondary part that B. occupies in his daughter's marriage. The most probable is that B. was advanced in age or for some other reason incapable of acting, so that the direction of domestic affairs had passed to Laban, his son and Rebekah's brother. Perhaps too Gen. dwells by preference on Laban, because of the part he will play in the story of Jacob (Gen. 29-31).
