BAUDOT, JULES. - Benedictine, b. at Notre-Dame-de-l'Isle (Eure) on 4 Aug. 1857, d. at the abbey of St. Michel de Farnborough on 24 Dec. 1929.

Rather a compiler and popularizer than a researcher and rigorous critic, besides contributing assiduously to various liturgical periodicals and writing several articles for the Dictionnaire de Théologie catholique and the Dictionnaire d'Archéologie chrét. et de Liturgie, he published from 1908 to 1914 some twenty fascicles on liturgical subjects in the collection Science et Religion (Paris): Le missel, Le bréviaire (Italian trans., Rome 1909), Le pontifical, Le martyrologe, etc. He contributed a new treatise to the Bibliothèque catholique des sciences religieuses: Le bréviaire (Paris 1929); however, his two principal works are: the Dictionnaire d'hagiographie (ibid. 1925) and Vies des Saints et des Bienheureux selon l'ordre du calendrier (12 vols., ibid. 1935 ff.). Death overtook him when he had reached, in the composition, the saints from 15 May onward. The publication of the manuscript and the continuation of the work passed to the Benedictines of Paris, who have so far issued 6 vols.
