BEELEN, JOHANN THEODOR. - Exegete, b. in Amsterdam on 12 Jan. 1807, canon at Liège, doctor and professor at the Catholic University of Louvain, where he d. on 31 March 1884.
Principal works: Chrestomathia rabbinica et chaldnica (3 vols., 1841-43); Liber Sapientiae graece secundum exemplar Vaticanum (1844); Dissertatio theologica, quae sententiam vulgo receptam, esse Sacrae Scripturae multiplicem interdum sensum litteralem, nullo fundamento satis firmo niti demonstrare conatur (1845); Interpretatio Epistolae s. Pauli ad Philippenses (1849, 2nd ed. 1852); Commentarius in Acta Apostolorum, cui integre adduntur textus graecus et latinus (2 vols., 1850-55, 2nd ed. 1864); Commentarius in Epistolam s. Pauli ad Romanos (1854); Grammatica graecitatis Novi Testamenti (1857). He also translated and composed in Flemish many biblical works, some of which are still in use. A. van der Heeren republished Het Boek der Psalmen, vertaald en uitgeled (Bruges 1941).
