BAUDISSIN, WOLF WILHELM von. - Protestant theologian, exegete of the «religionsgeschichtliche Schule», b. at Sophienhof, near Kiel, 26 Oct. 1847; d. at Berlin, 6 Feb. 1926. In 1874 he became Privatdozent in Old Testament at Leipzig; in 1876 extraordinary professor and in 1880 full professor at Strasbourg; he moved to Marburg in 1881 and to Berlin in 1900, where he taught until 1921. He concerned himself especially with Semitic religions in relation to Israelite religion.
His principal works are: Studien zur semitischen Religionsgeschichte (2 vols., Leipzig 1876-78); Geschichte des alttestamentlichen Priestertums (ibid. 1889); Einleitung in die Bücher des Alten Testaments (ibid. 1901); Esmun-Asklepios (ibid. 1906); Adonis und Esmun (ibid. 1911); and above all Kyrios als Gottesname im Judentum und seine Stellung in der Religionsgeschichte (4 vols., ibid. 1926-29), edited by Otto Eissfeldt.
