BENZINGER, IMMANUEL. - Protestant exegete and scholar of Palestine, b. in Stuttgart in 1865, d. in March 1935. In 1898 he was Privatdozent in the Old Testament at Berlin; in 1912 ordinary professor at Toronto, Canada; in 1915 at Meadville (Pennsylvania); and in 1921 at Riga. He was an adherent first of Wellhausen’s critical school, then of the pan-Babylonian school.
His principal works: Hebräische Archäologie (Leipzig 1894-1907); Die Bücher der Könige (Freiburg im Br.-Tübingen 1899); Die Bücher der Chronik (ibid. 1901); Geschichte Israels (Leipzig 1904; 3rd ed., Berlin 1924); Bilderatlas zur Bibelkunde (together with L. Frohnmeyer, Stuttgart 1905 and ibid. 1913); Jahvist und Elohist in den Königsbüchern (ibid. 1921). He was editor of the Zeitschrift des Deutschen Palästinavereins from 1897 to 1902, and of K. Bädeker, Palästina und Syrien (from the 3rd to the 7th ed., 1890-1910).
